So technically summer doesn’t actually start for another few days, but it’s pretty much already here in Houston. Schools out, summer camps are happening, and I’ve already been on at least one vacation. That careless feeling of no deadlines and priorities are settling in, and my summer playlist has been on repeat. It’s filled with mostly rock anthems and country jams to fuel the Texan road trips. There are also some surprises on here. Take a look below for some of my favorite and unique summer jams!
CRUISR|Kidnap Me
This is arguably the funnest tune on the playlist. I’m not even sure how to describe the sound. Google says CRUISR is an “indie pop band,” which isn’t wrong. It’s just feels a little vague and underserving. “Kidnap Me” has this light and bouncy feel with a little bit of a retro vibe. The opening riff immediately takes you to a new place and time. Listen to the track and let me know where it takes you.
The Cocktails|Shark in the Water
There’s a good chance that this is the only a cappella band in my Spotify library, and it’s definitely the only one in my summer tunes. True to any good a cappella piece, the vocals are deep and seem to surround you almost as much as five piece band. The tune is catchy and upbeat, despite being about a fearful relationship. But isn’t that how all summer romances start out?
R5|Let’s Not Be Alone Tonight
Here’s another track about summer lovin’. Yes, R5 is a Disney band. I guess you can call it one (out of many) of my guilty pleasures. I don’t have too many of the band’s tracks saved, but the ones I have are some of my favorite songs ever. They’re all unique to each other, showing off their diverse talents. This particular track fits more perfectly in the modern pop rock genre, just like 5SOS.
kwassa|Pull Me Up
Here’s a track to slow things down. It’s got some powerful synth vibes that will consume your whole body if you listen to it lough enough with headphones on. I consider it an ode to the summer season, wanting to go all in and never go back. It’s an easy listen for when you’re just hanging out, enjoying the sun’s warmth after a dip in the cold water.
Dresses|Sun Shy (Acoustic)
I’m actually prefer the acoustic version of this song over the original mix. It’s simple with a little folk element. The duo’s vocals contrast well. I’m not too familiar with their other tracks, but this one is a favorite. I rarely skip over it because it’s such a smooth listen. It’s great for picnics outdoor in the shade when there’s a little breeze in the air.
